Muratic Acid
CompositionComponents CAS No. % by wt. TLV Sodium Hypochlorite 7647-01-0 31-35% ACGIH CEILING 5 ppm Water 7732-18-5 65.0-69.0% not established FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA Flash Point: not available Flammable limits: non flammable Extinguishing media: N/A Special Firing Fighting Procedure: Firefighters should wear full protective clothing and OSHA/NIOSH self-contained breathing apparatus. Water fog will be most effective for controlling HCL vapors. Fire and explosion Hazards: Hydrochloric acid does not decompose at temperatures below 1500 degrees C. It is non flammable; however flammable and potentially explosive hydrogen gas is generated from reaction with most metals. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY Chemical: Stable Conditions to avoid: To prevent ignition of hydrogen gas generated by muriatic acid, contact with most metals; smoking, flames and sparks should not be permitted in storage or handling areas. Hazardous Products of decomposition: Does not decompose Polymerization: Will NOT Occur.
Incompatibility: Most metals, Alkalies, metallic oxides, amines, esters, and certain other organics cause exothermic reactions, possibly violent. Carbonates , cyanides, sulfides yield toxic gas. Water reactive materials such as sulfuric acid, oleum, and acetic anhydride cause exothermic reaction.
Emergency Overview Corrosive; May cause severe skin and eye irritation or chemical burns to broken skin. Vapors extremely irritating to eyes and respiratory tract. HARMFUL AND POTENTIALLY FATAL IF SWALLOWED. INGESTION: Can cause corrosion of mucous membranes, severe esophageal burns and perforation of esophagus or stomach. INHALATION: Inhalation of vapors can cause bronchial irritation, coughing, difficulty in breathing, nausea and pulmonary edema. EYE CONTACT: Corrosive to the eyes; may cause severe and permanent damage. SKIN CONTACT: Severe irritant; contact can produce blistering and eczema. Avoid breathing vapors. Do not store near food , water , or feed. Protect eyes, skin, and clothing from contact with this product.
FIRST AIDE MEASURES INGESTION: If swallowed DO NOT induce vomit Immediately drink a large quantity of water. Do not use acidic antidotes or sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Call a physician or poison control center immediately. INHALATION: If exposed to excessive vapor levels, remove to fresh air and seek medical attention if cough or other symptoms occur. EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush eye with plenty of cool, running water. Remove contact lenses if applicable, and continue flushing for at least 15 min. GET medical attention immediately. SKIN CONTACT: Flush affected skin area with copious amounts of water and wash with soap and water. If irritation develops or persists, get medical attention. Remove clothing and wash before reuse. Personal Protective RESPIRATOR: Not normally necessary; use NIOSH approved respirator for concentrated vapors. GOGGLES/FACE SHIELD: Required; goggles should be chemical splash type. Face shield also helpful. APRON: Recommended to avoid skin contact and protect clothing from damage. GLOVES: Required; use impervious PVC or Neoprene with long gauntlet. BOOT: Recommended to protect shoes and feet when using product for cleaning floors.
